L’attribution des quartiers de Venise remonte à l’an 1771, à l’époque du Doge Vitale Michiel II. Les quartiers ont été divisés selon leur position par rapport au Grand Canal. Les quartiers "de citra" sont San Marco, Castello et Cannaregio. Les quartiers "de ultra" se trouvent sur l’autre rive du Grand Canal et comprennent S. Croce, S. Polo, Dorsoduro et l’île de la Giudecca. San Marco prend son nom de la basilique et fut, à cette période, le centre politique et commercial avec le Palais des Doges, le siège du gouvernement, les bureaux des Procuratie, les magistraux et les tribunaux.
