Le quartier Cannaregio

est le second par étendue de Venise. De tous les quartiers c’est le plus accessible facilement de la terre ferme. Il est traversé par une zone très importante et très fréquentée, la Strada Nuova. La zone était déjà peuplée densément depuis l’an 1000 à proximité de S. Giovanni Grisostomo et à côté de l’église SS. Apostoli. Plus tard, vers l’an 1400, de nouvelles zones furent construites autour des églises S. Sofia, S. Felice, S. Marziale, S. Fosca, S. Marcuola, S. Leonardo et S. Geremia. Après la construction du pont della Ferrovia (1841) et de la gare ferroviaire (1860), la nouvelle portion du quartier est devenue le côté le plus urbaniste.
