Venice Quarter Dorsoduro
The district of Dorsoduro, anciently referred to as "scòpulo" (or rock) was named because it was formed from the islands of the lagoon from a false bottom which was made solid. It was the residence of the fishermen of the lagoon, who had their parish center or "quarter" of S.Nicolò of the Mendigoli (and called Nicolotti), and also of the gondoliers. The Isle Of The Giudecca, were the first Hebrew refugee residences, and mostly made up of orchards and gardens. It was also a place of relaxation and delight for the Venetian nobles.
The origin of the name "Dorsoduro" is from the high points above water ground of which rests/lays in this part of Venice. The north borders the districts of S. Croce and S. Polo at the end of the Grand Canal.
