Venice Quarter Castello
The Castello district, in the eastern part of Venice, takes its name from an erected fortress (no longer in existence) which was used to defend the harbor and shore of S.Nicolò. This was considered the seafaring center of the town, and was mostly populated by sailors and "arsenalotti" (the naval workers). The residents were called “castellani”.
This Castello district occupies the Eastern part of the city. It extends to the islands of San Pietro and Sant’Elena. To the north and east, it is defined by the lagoon. And, to the south by the basin of San Marco and the districts of San Marco and Canareggio lie to the West.
